As we wade deeper into the 21st.
century, there are two truisms about the art world
that seem very apparent: classical painting is not
dead and there are fewer and fewer institutions that
are able to teach young painters these techniques
and methodologies. Laila Carlsen is one painter that
seems to have found the best of the best to learn
from.
After one year at Einar Granum
Academy and a three year apprenticeship with Odd
Nerdrum, Laila was one of only three artist chosen
annually to study at the prestigious Acadamy of Fine
Arts in Prague with professor Zdenek Beran, which
subsequently led to a one year visit to the San Francisco
Art Institute. She now calls San Francisco home.
Her work strives to capture the impossible: that
split second after waking from a dream when we can
still remember our trip through the other world.
While most of us lose this moment
to bright lights and a hot shower, Laila is able
to capture her world-between- worlds on canvas. Accepting
no portrait comissions, the figures that appear in
her work are not idealized portraits of wealthy patrons
or characters from history but a rendering of what
isn’t
there for all to see. What she captures is the person
inside the model; the spirit. Both timeless and eternal
her paintings create a world of beauty and mystery
in which many who see her world, want to visit.
Maybe
an idealized past. Or hopefully, a glimpse into a
future we can all share.
