Robert Schelling is native
to New England. He grew up in the Boston area,
spending his high school years assisting Boston-area
artists. In 1984, Schelling graduated from the
University of California at Berkeley with a degree
in Anthropology. Art and anthropology combined
during his travels to India, where he studied with
traditional bronze sculptors, casting sculpture
for Hindu temples and tribal shrines. Classical bronze
sculpture, temple architecture and geometry in nature
all inform Schelling’s art.
Schelling is a founding
member of the Vermont Gentleman’s
Foundry in East Corinth, Vermont, where he uses the ‘lost
wax’ process to make his original sculpture.
He is also a founding member of the critically acclaimed
Boston Sculptors Gallery. His work has exhibited
in Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Santa Fe, and
Paris, France. Recent installations include bronzes
for a public park in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
Schelling has taught drawing and sculpture at Wellesley
College and Clark University. He lives in Putney,
Vermont with his wife and son and maintains a professional
base in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
